The Mattamy Homes and Kidney March Connection

Kidney March is honoured to have many remarkable supporters that help champion its growth and success, making it the impactful movement it is today. One of those vital supporters has been Mattamy Homes, sponsoring our cause and community again for their sixth year.

Mattamy Homes, also plays an active role in volunteering at the march. Many staff have been impacted by kidney disease and some have personally completed the 100KM challenge.

“We focus on giving back to the causes that matter most to our team and Kidney March is one of them. We are thrilled to have increased our donation this year to include The Spa, Finish Line and Tent Cities.”
– Mattamy Homes

At the core of Mattamy’s culture is its value for communities. This dedication to making a positive impact starts with their Founder, Peter Gilgan and flows into the actions of their leadership team and employees. Mattamy Homes’ commitment to Kidney March has had a significant impact on Kidney March exceeding its goals, creating more funding to support vital research and patient needs.

“It’s been a fantastic experience being involved in Kidney March. To feel like we’re making a difference in people’s lives and the lives of our own employees who have been impacted. It’s an incredible feeling to support such a worthy cause.”

Jon Hislop, New Home Technician for Mattamy Homes in Calgary has marched and volunteered on behalf of Mattamy

“Kidney March is extremely organized, inclusive, and everyone is just happy to be there. I had an opportunity to hand out shirts at the finish line and it was special to be a part of it. You see exhausted yet happy people walking up who feel very proud of what they just accomplished.”
– John Hislop

Hislop is on team Renal Defenders again this year. He is proud to be Marching for his nephew Liam who received a lifesaving transplant and in honour of his Nana who fought kidney disease.

Kidney March and Mattamy Homes have an invaluable partnership.
We are beyond grateful for their involvement and six years of dedicated support.
Thank You Mattamy Homes

Say hello to Mattamy Homes staff marching and waiting for you at the finish line!

Meet Lead Sponsor Pipella Law

What Kidney March Means to Lead Sponsor, Pipella Law

Pipella Law was founded in the 1960s by Edward S. Pipella, Q.C., to represent people who had suffered injuries as the result of someone else’s negligence. Today, Pipella Law continues its practice and specializes in personal injury litigation. Daughters, Tara D. Pipella, and her sister, Kimber R. Pipella, followed in his footsteps, and have carried on his legacy, by continuing to help those who have sustained catastrophic injuries for many years.

This boutique law firm is proud to support Kidney March and continue their father’s legacy of serving the community as a Lead Sponsor this year. Our Dad taught us that we are servants to the community and we need to help others. He passed that on to us, and we will continue to honour his legacy through Kidney March. He would be proud of our involvement in the march, and would want us to be a part of this important cause.”– Kimber Pipella

Additionally, The Kidney Foundation holds a special place in the Pipella family’s heart, as their father passed away from kidney disease. All three sisters, Sloan, Tara, and Kimber marched in his memory in 2015. “Being in Kidney March was such a heartfelt experience. It is a wonderful community of people with true selflessness and passion. We met so many incredible, giving individuals.” – Kimber Pipella.

Thank you Pipella Law for your continued support for Kidney March!

Sponsor Mattamy Homes Receives National Special Appreciation Award!

Kidney March would like to congratulate and celebrate our Lead Sponsor, Mattamy Homes’ Calgary Division, for receiving this year’s National Special Appreciation Award from The Kidney Foundation of Canada. Mattamy Homes was presented with this award to thank and recognize their significant impact and contributions to The Kidney Foundation through Kidney March over the years. When 2020 forced Kidney March to pivot to virtual, Mattamy Homes continued their commitment to the cause. An event of this magnitude cannot succeed without the support of community partners like Mattamy Homes. Their commitment as a sponsor has helped Kidney March exceed its goals, creating more vital funding to meet the increased needs of patients and programs.

“Winning this award is truly humbling. We are so proud to be involved and we look forward to being involved for many years to come.” – Colette Showers

Kidney March welcomed Mattamy Homes into the Kidney March family in 2017, and they have stayed on board ever since. In those five years of sponsorship, Mattamy’s Calgary Division has donated over $33,500 towards Kidney March and played an active role. Mattamy’s employees have not only volunteered for Kidney March, but many have personally completed the 100KM challenge. When Mattamy Homes was looking for a new charitable opportunity to get involved in, they had no idea how many of their staff were directly affected or connected to kidney disease or organ donation.

At the core of Mattamy’s culture is their focus on community. “It starts at the top and spreads throughout the company. We want to focus our support on projects with big impact – projects where we can actually see the difference we are making, and that our people can get involved in.” – Don Barrineau, President of Mattamy Homes’ Calgary Division.

Mattamy Homes has been our camp spa and finish line sponsor for the last 5 years.
Keep an eye out for some fun to come from them in 2021!

Transform your home into a Kidney March Camp Oasis with the help of Mattamy!

Kidney March welcomed Mattamy Homes to the Kidney March family three years ago and we can’t thank them enough for staying on board with us as a lead sponsor for 2020.  They’re also excited to provide some virtual fun for our marchers this year.

In the past it’s been Mattamy’s gift to refresh all marchers and crew at the end of each day as our spa sponsor. In keeping with tradition, they wanted to support marchers by supplying a little ‘how to’ guide for your at home Kidney March camp and spa!  Follow this link for  Tips to set up your at home Kidney March Camp & Spa!

Mattamy has also sponsored many of the beautiful pathways here in Calgary and so they wanted to help by providing us with route suggestions through Strava for our marchers to safely walk during Kidney March. Here is the one of the routes so far! This 6 km (one-way) route takes you from the Carrington Greenway park south and then east along beautiful pathway and rolling prairie. Thank you Mattamy Homes staff member Joe Case for sharing this amazing route with us! Rotary Mattamy Greenway – Carrington Park

When Executive Assistant Colette Showers and the donations committee were looking for a new charitable opportunity to get involved in, they had no idea how many of their staff were directly affected or had a connection to kidney disease or organ transplant.

Don Barrineau, President of Mattamy Homes’ Calgary division, notes Mattamy has always had a deep interest in supporting the communities it does business in, particularly around health and wellness. When it comes to Kidney March and The Kidney Foundation of Canada he says, “everything we read about this charity shows the efficiency of the funds raised – the money really goes directly to the patients. All of the unsolicited comments we receive from customers and trades about the impact of this organization are overwhelmingly positive. We are very proud to continue our involvement!”

Otsuka Continues their Kidney March Commitment

For the 6th year in a row, Otsuka returns to support Kidney March as a Lead Sponsor.

On day one of Kidney March 2019, Otsuka employees were working hard to hand out lunch to all our hungry marchers and crew. André Mumme, Otsuka’s Manager of Stakeholder Relations, says supporting fundraising events like the Kidney March is an essential part of their organization. Even though there will not be lunch stops this year Otsuka is strongly committed to giving back and supporting all the communities they serve. “Otsuka employees share a unique and tireless passion to help enhance the health and quality of human life around the world.” Otsuka is also the national sponsor for the Kidney Walks Canada-wide. André himself feels a strong connection to the Kidney March and took on the 100 km challenge two years ago as a Marcher and many other Otsuka employees have marched the full 100 km over the years.

“Seldom in one’s career do you get to be part of something so powerful. I came to Kidney March thinking I was handing out a few sandwiches at a charity event and was blown away by the people I met — their struggles, people they have lost, and their dedication. Everyone was positive and smiling no matter their personal circumstances. There is nothing like Kidney March.”

2020 Returning Sponsors The Ruparell Family

Vinay, Bhavini, Asha, and Jyoti have a lot to be thankful for and being part of the Kidney March family is one of those things.

Although Bhavini Ruparell laughs when she says, “she will never ‘walk’ Kidney March again,” she and her whole family are proud to support and be a part of Kidney March. They have marched, crewed and are multi-year sponsors. The past two years they have been our massage tent sponsor, a necessity for every marcher’s tired body after a long day of walking. Although there isn’t a massage tent this year, their sponsorship will go a long way to support those living courageously with kidney disease. We thank them for their unwavering sponsorship.

We also want to thank them for everything they do to raise awareness for the importance of organ donation.

Kidney Marcher Bhavini is a kidney transplant recipient from a deceased donor and a proud advocate for organ donation, “…the best way we can honour them[donors] is by following their example.” Bhavini has a message for everyone who is registered to donate. “It’s really important for people who are now signing their organ donation cards or registering themselves to have that conversation with their family.”

Otsuka carries on Kidney March tradition, supporting the day one lunch stop and marching!

For the 5th year in a row, Otsuka returns to support Kidney March as a Lead Sponsor.

On day one, Otsuka employees will be working hard to hand out lunch to all our hungry marchers and crew. André Mumme, Otsuka’s Manager of Stakeholder Relations, says supporting fundraising events like the Kidney March is an essential part of their organization and concern for people is one of Otsuka’s Cultural Values. The Japanese company with a Canadian Headquarters in Montreal feels strongly about the importance of giving back and being involved in activities that are meaningful to all the communities they serve.

“Otsuka employees share a unique and tireless passion to help enhance the health and quality of human life around the world.” Otsuka is also the national sponsor for the Kidney Walks Canada-wide. André himself feels a strong connection to the Kidney March and took on the 100 km challenge last year as a first time Marcher.

Other Otsuka employees have also marched the full 100 km over the years. One of them will be back again this year for the third time, saying that “Seldom in one’s career do you get to be part of something so powerful. I came to Kidney March thinking I was handing out a few sandwiches at a charity event and was blown away by the people I met — their struggles, people they have lost, and their dedication. Everyone was positive and smiling no matter their personal circumstances. There is nothing like Kidney March.”
